The Rise and Fall of a Harpy

PERSONAL ACTION:

Kindred Contacts x 2

Quite simply put, Gene is trying to find out what exactly is the protocol for Harpy appointment. Specifically, does one *actually* need an assembled Primogen Council? Or can our one Primogen, and bunch of stand-ins function just as well? Since things are so lopsided, is there any precedent for Harpies in cities that can't sustain a Primogen Council?

Basically, can I tell Molly Auldington "It's cool, this is okay, I got it, here's your status go be Harpy"?

That'd be swell if I could.

GOAL: discern rules/etiquette regarding Harpies. Discern if there will be scandal/backlash if she's just understood to be okay by word of the Prince.

Influence Response:

"Appoint a harpy?" Your contacts sound rather incredulous. "You know that's not generally done but if you feel the need to declare someone as something you're well within your rights. You are the Prince, aren't you? I suppose she'd have some sort of clout, with the prince backing her, but why are you so hung up on Primogen? Those are up to the Clans, not you. Well, mostly not you. Someone can be a Primogen and you can ignore them as much as you want, simply because anyone can say that they are the Primogen for their Clan. It all matters with how much support they have from the others. And who'll support someone who the Prince ignores? (Well, unless the prince is useless, and I am assuming that you're not one of those puppet princes.) I mean, really, who respects the Primogen of a group of one? There's no one there to back-up his claim! Like Jeb. Does anyone take that man seriously? I suppose it'd be different if it were a city of Brujah, maybe then he'd have some say, but he's the only one willing to live in that hick town."

PERSONAL ACTION:

"You get various phone calls from all over Europe congratulating Molly, in various ways, on getting the harpy position. They all mention in one way or another that they found out from Parker that you're the one to talk to in NY now."

The first couple calls manage to catch Molly off guard, but after the third or fourth she realizes what is happening. Taking the initiative Molly decides that if Mr. Parker wishes to give her his Rolodex she is quite inclined to accept it.

Molly speaks with grace to each of the individuals who call her, attempting both to entertain (in a social way) as well as to be slightly memorable. She takes a few minor risks with asking various callers about each other to a limited extent and tries to find those who seem interested in actually chatting (and is willing to use accurate but minor tactics such as mild gossip, information, etc to make this happen.)

Over the course of the week, she takes what she has learned and writes letters and more formal correspondences on the various topics of interest she picked up from each conversation to those whose contact information she is able to locate. She buys small gifts where she feels it would be appropriate, and generally does her best to ingratiate herself (at least on a lightly social level) with as many of the callers as she can get her hands on.

Molly is attempting to justify buying Kindred Contacts x5 (up from Contacts x4) by grabbing the part of Parker's contact list he so generously identified to her.

She has 2 Cherished Status + her Harpy status, 8 socials (most of which are aimed at this - maybe 9, I can't remember if I bought another one last game), Expression, Empathy, Etiquette x2, Politics x2, and Subterfuge x2. She also has the Clan Friendship Toreador merit.

Influence Response:

You have wonderful and lovely talks with the more chatty and friendly ones, catty and snippy talks with the more bitchy ones. What you discover as you talk to them is that there's a "Harpy Network" that the Harpies work off of centered in Western Europe and North America, and that these harpies have been calling you in the confirmation that you're now Harpy instead of Mr. Parker.

OOC: There's nothing to steal. The points of Kindred Contacts that Parker used have been transferred to you because the position of harpy grants you a dot of Kindred Contacts. We the STs just keep on forgetting to put them on your sheet.

PERSONAL ACTION:

Molly calls up those few contacts she can think to call up regarding Mr. Mark Davis of clan Toreador. She knows he's from the San Francisco area, that he has a prestigious sire, and her name (which I do not remember OOC).

This time, having less contacts on the West Coast, Molly is forced to go through more formal channels and try to talk her way into a position where she can get to know his history. Her first aim is to verify his story regarding the likelihood of his being sent by his sire to New York to help out with the Sabbat problem. From there she is really looking for any notable incidents. She also wants to get a rough guess how old he is, at least in ballpark. If she has too much trouble getting information on him she'll switch to getting information on his sire, which is probably much easier.

Molly is using her Contacts (of which she has x6, but will stop as soon as she feels she's getting a reasonable picture of Mr. Davis's background) to get background information on Mr. Mark Davis of clan Toreador.

Molly has to help her:

Politics x2
Subterfuge x2
Empathy x1
Expression (1-3? not sure any more)
Cam Lore x3
Etiquette (Camarilla) x2
8 (9?) socials mostly aimed at doing this
Clan Friendship Toreador
2 status + prestigious sire + Harpy status

Influence Response:

After many a game of telephone tag and the like, you manage to actually get in contact with Mark's sire. Mary Concannon is a very animated speaker, who is very blunt with her words and prone to cracking jokes with a sharp wit. She speaks with a crisp British accent.

She tells you Mark is indeed telling you the truth about why he's in New York. The silly git has a hero complex and needed to do something to satisfy it. That thing with his eye? That's because he ran into the fray during an attack in San Francisco. He's an adorably silly boy, really, but he has become ever so much better with the sword that he's become rather formidable with it.

She ends the conversation by telling Molly that he's not terribly too old, so go a bit easy on him if he boffs things up.

Quick question, O those more learned than I in such things.

Can a Harpy remove the statuses "Acknowledged" or "Tolerated?"

And if they claimed that they could, and had intentions to do so underneath the clueless Prince's nose, would that constitute a scandal?

Thanks. Car chases and Sabbat, I understand. All this political intrigue is new to me.

~E.C. Wright.

Influence Response:

Wooo-eee! Your harpy tryin' to one-up you? Well, she can do that, but she needs to have proof that a certified scandal has taken place to do so, aaaaand she needs to do it public-ally. Doin' it behind closed doors means that she's going in over your head. May as well be declairin' Praxis at that point. By the by, you're completely in your rights to re-give whatever she takes away. After all, you're the boss.

PERSONAL ACTION:

Note: Please feel free to tell me that Molly gets whatever I can find OOC instead of feeling the need to write up some long thing - though I would appreciate a quick list of differences from WoD cannon (if they're not on the site). I swear I am not trying to drive you nuts with all my actions this week. Molly is just kinda crazy busy.

-----------------------------------------------------

What Molly is trying to do:

Molly investigates Calebros. Her eventual end-goal is to try to get some idea of why he has presently taken an interest in New York again and how he is likely to move.

She is trying to discover:

1. As much as she can about his history, especially that part of it in which he controlled New York.
2. Whatever she can find about his general personality, especially how humane he is said to be, and how political (how "in the game" he is)
3. Whatever she can piece together about his motives for getting involved in New York now
4. If she was to get him a gift, what would be appreciated. (She's thinking in terms of a host gift)

----------------------------------------------------:

How Molly Does it::

Molly probably starts her investigation by writing to Mr. Davidson, honestly explaining the situation (complete with a note how she thinks her vacation from politics is over), and hoping he has information to give her. (Molly and Mr. Davidson are getting along extremely well right now). She'd even be willing to go out to see him (though expects him to say no to this). She will follow up with the utmost courtesy with any leads he may give her, and if they happen to be Nosferatu she will also go so far as to try to make contacts with them.:

She then writes to Richard, asking him for anything he knows. To him, she very much words it in terms of "My task is to keep New York stable; I want to make sure I understand the players on the board and if they're going to assist or detriment that goal. I also want to know how to interact with him and just how bad this could be should the need arise. I understand I probably shouldn't be the one having to do this, but with politics as they are, if Calebros is to be spoken to there is a chance I will need to be the one to do it." (This is the way Molly calculates as likely to get her the most complete response).

Molly also writes a letter to Godfrey with much the same request, though somewhat more loosely written. ((Note: This letter also contains a request regarding the "Second Camarilla" question which is shown as a separate influence/contacts action. ))

She will then try calling other Nosferatu she knows and asking about him in very general terms. She absolutely won't press these contacts though, for two reasons. 1. She figures anything she talks about with a Nosferatu has a not half-unlikely chance of making it back to Calabros's network somehow, and she's not trying to get that sort of attention - she wants her inquiries to come off as general interest, and figures if Vinny hasn't mentioned anything about her to the people down there she can probably pull that off. 2. Nosferatu usually charge for information, and she's trying not to indebt herself too much to Nosferatu. Molly is willing to put up a couple thousand dollars cash for the information as fair exchange, but she's not willing to offer up boons, and she knows the Nosferatu will probably require them for anything beyond superficial information.

Sheet Stuff she uses:

Molly is using Contacts x5 (of her available x7) to try to investigate Calebros.

She has 9 socials, 8 of which are useful for stuff like this

Politics x2
Kindred Lore x2
Cam Lore x3
Empathy
Etiquette x2
Expression x2
Subterfuge x2
Status: Acknowledged, Cherished x2, + Harpy Status, + Prestigious Sire.

Influence Response:

We'll talk to you at game about this.

PERSONAL ACTION:

What she is trying to do:

Molly is attempting to investigate the "Second Camarilla" movement which she ran into last game.

----

How she is trying to do it:

She starts by writing a letter to Godfrey, ((Note: this letter also contains questions regarding Calebros as shown in a separate influence action)) in which she explains that the "Second Camarilla" may be becoming politically relevant in New York and she wants to know about the movement, if she should be concerned, etc. (Note: Godfrey is an independent who supported the Anarch movement out of idealism only to watch it fall apart. He hates the Sabbat. It's entirely possible he supports this "Second Camarilla" movement)

Molly will follow-up on any leads Godfrey gives her, with a due amount of respect to each. If Godfrey doesn't know anything at all, nor can he suggest anyone, she will give up.

Note: I don't know anything about this OOC, so I will need a reference to information about it.

Sheet stuff;

Molly is using Contacts x2 (out of her Contacts x7) towards investigating the "Second Camarilla".

She has 9 socials, 8 of which are useful for stuff like this

Politics x2
Kindred Lore x2
Cam Lore x3
Empathy
Etiquette x2
Expression x2
Subterfuge x2
Status: Acknowledged, Cherished x2, + Harpy Status, + Prestigious Sire, Friendship Clan Toreador (if it helps)

Influence Response:

We'll talk to you at game about this.

PERSONAL ACTION:

Kindred Context x1

(NOTE: Unless you wish to tell me something otherwise, I don't really need a response other than "It is so."

So. Brody's Harpy done gone and gave two people status last court. This is either

A: Molly just pulled a Seth Samuel, and doesn't know that she can't do that with Status, or,

B: Molly wants the privileges of being the Prince, without Brody noticing. Because as near as he can tell, she can't do what she did - only he can.

So he'll (as discreetly as he can, which in this case, is probably not very) hit up some of his Kindred Contacts, the odd Harpy - NOT Alicia from Cleveland, if he can help it - and sort of confirm how things are supposed to go, normally. He won't mention Molly by name, he'll talk about the situation as a hypothetical.

Given what he knows (and what I, Jonathan, know OOC) it is safe to assume that Harpynet will respond with a general consensus that while this may not be "Scandal" specifically, it might as well be Praxis - she may as well go around granting Hospitality and Acknowledgment, or executing people, or any of the other prince-only things.

Harpies like to get snippy about hypotheticals. Brody will try to play up the fact that he's a Brujah who's Prince for military reasons, and maybe doesn't understand what all goes on with Statusy things.

************************************************************

GOAL: Brody wants to confirm what Jonathan knows OOC - that Harpies can't do that, and this is sort of a problem. (Cammy and I talked, and she said that the scene should stand, as it's too big to redline)

Influence Response:

[If we need to discuss hypotheticals, then I need to know the context of the situation - did she grant Status while Brody was around? What if not? Either case is pretty bad. Also, because I am Peter and would like to put ideas in players' heads, remember that the Seneschal has the same powers that the Prince does, kekeke. Just something to chew on.]

Molly Elizabeth Rosalind Auldington; April 12, 2009

PERSONAL ACTION:

Molly's topic of interest for this week is Rasa. She is specifically trying to learn:

What Molly is trying to do:

1. His basic history, especially:

  • a. A rough guestimate of how old he probably is (are we talking 50, 100, 250, 500, more?)

  • b. How he gained his various status.

2. If he has any notable interactions with the Auldington, especially anything as dramatic as a feud or alliance.

3. Any really well known likes/dislikes (things which piss him off irrationally or which he is known to adore).

How Molly is Trying to do it:

Her first step is to call her Father (Mentor x5) (Note for John: Toreador Elder/Archon who works primarily with internal investigations in the Camarilla) and ask him if he's ever heard of a Malkavian by the name of Rasa (This should answer the any major feuds/alliances question) and if there's anything she should know about him and if he has any ideas where she might start looking for information. She's willing to use the phone for this as she does not view it as horribly sensitive nor requiring long explanation.

From there, if her Father can give her any cities to start in she will start calling her contacts (Contacts 6 or 7 - mostly Toreador/Ventrue/Brujah with some Malkavians and other clans, plus city Harpies) in those cities to see what she can find out. She doesn't have a huge number of Malkavian contacts, but when available they are a focus of hers.

What Molly is using to do it:

Molly is using Mentor x5 (Jean) and Contacts x6-7. To try to investigate information about Rasa.

I will also send this to the player as per ST comments.

Influence Response:

Noted.
