Another Malkavian Vision

An indigo butterfly flutters through a twilight sky that is an ominous stringed symphony with the occasional tingling of starlit bells. The butterfly flitters down to earth past the desert from before, adding a rainstick rhythm to the melodic strings. As the scene begins to change again the strings take on a more rhythmic melody and voices are added:

"Philomel, with melody
Sing in our sweet lullaby;
Lulla, lulla, lullaby, lulla, lulla, lullaby:
Never harm,
Nor spell nor charm,
Come our lovely lady nigh;
So, good night, with lullaby."

The butterfly continues on to that scene with the fallen king and the several specters standing from the blood. She flies past the woman from both scenes that has been haunting Kaya's dreams, and as she flitters by, the body of the butterfly becomes a woman's body that is very obviously Kaya. She looks up at the woman and then flitters off again back to the desert and the place where the woman had first disappeared.

"Let me find you!"

The noises grow to a crescendo as the butterfly girl dives towards the earth and the vision goes black.

You send the vision into MalkSpace (tm)...

Nothing happens for weeks. You start to get the impression that your effort hasn't had any impact and that the individual you seek to reach is unresponsive.

In Amsterdam, however, you are struck one evening by the fact that an awfully familiar blue butterfly is hovering around a street lamp along with the moths. It looks exactly as the one you depicted yourself as in the vision.

Following it, you come to an alleyway, wherein you find the ground is covered in soft, fine, downy feathers, just like snow. They burn when you touch them, being colder than anything you have ever felt before. They hiss as you touch them, and you hear a quiet din of shattering glass and bells all around you. You realize you're quite possibly dreaming.

The alleyway extends, and you see less and less of the city and more and more of the burning cold feathers, which sweep out into a gigantic and soft expanse of white, much like the arctic desert you saw before. The butterfly flaps more and more slowly, as tiny little icicles form on the tips of its wings. Eventually it falls dead on the ground, and you find yourself quite alone and lost. The earth starts to sink from beneath your feet.

You realize you've been standing on nothing but feathers.

You are sucked down into coldness. All around you there is a cacophony of painful shattering sounds and palpable darkness. After a while you emerge, stunned, in a great cavern illuminated with a dull blue light. The dead butterfly lies torn at your feet.

In the center of the cavern is the pale woman. She is dressed in a white robe this time and is kneeling on the ground next to a large pool of water. The knight, whom you now recognize on sight, lies comatose, resting his head in her lap. All around you hear the sound of church bells and a din of soft women's voices singing.

Pater noster, qui es in caelis:
sanctificetur Nomen Tuum;
adveniat Regnum Tuum;
fiat voluntas Tua, sicut in caelo, et in terra.
Panem nostrum cotidianum da nobis hodie;
et dimitte nobis debita nostra,
Sicut et nos dimittimus debitoribus nostris;
et ne nos inducas in tentationem;
sed libera nos a Malo.

You realize after a span that it is not an illusion of your mind that is evoking the song, but that the walls of the cavern are made out of frozen, near skeletal birds, who all chant in eerie unison as a biting wind moves over their beaks.

The woman actually regards you this time, and looks at you with sullen disdain.

"I am here."

She looks to the fallen knight and brushes a hand over his head tenderly. He does not move.

She gets up, leaving him to lie on the ground, and brings water from the pool in her cupped hands, splashing it over his forehead and washing it off with her hair. She looks over him expectantly, but he still does not arise from sleep.

She looks to you again, this time somewhat frustrated and bewildered. She tries to sound authoritative.

"In darkness and flame, I said... I said the three of us would meet again... that's the end to it. This is not for you. We are not for you."

You look back and see that the knight has been replaced with a lamb, still asleep and with a red Chi Rho emblazoned on its head.

"Go, woman. We... Hadrian, he's not for anyone either. No one except... yes..."

She hangs her head and all at once the birds stop singing. The lamb awakens, and you see Evans again, kneeling right beside her, looking stoic but perhaps a little sad. His coat is torn, and he smells of incense. There is a discordant mix of things that might be old folk songs or bits of opera, but they're too much of a jumble to make out. The knight is suddenly there as well, making an odd juxtaposition with the still-remaining lamb, and he starts to strangle Evans, who smiles in response. As this occurs, Evans vomits forth a black serpent which bites the knight on the neck.

They fall to the ground struggling, while the woman scoops up the lamb and holds it to herself, her eyes fixed the entire time upon you.

The walls of the cavern start to rumble as the birds -jackdaws, starlets and crows- break free and swarm the two struggling men, pecking furiously. The entire structure starts to crumble into a roar of blood, combat, and collapse. Both men fall into the shallow pool, dying it red as they are overwhelmed.

The woman turns to you angrily and you hear a single stark melody arise from the din. It is a sad one.

"Get out."

With those words she breaks the lambs neck and the entire scene goes silent. You feel the cold of the cavern seems to swallow you up as the birds fly past you, but you can hear nothing. You awaken in your hotel room.
